Pilrig House is an historic, A-Listed, 17th-century Scottish Townhouse (built in 1638), which is uniquely located in a tranquil park, yet only a 15-minute stroll or 5 minutes by bus (there is a frequent bus service nearby) to Edinburgh’s city centre and all the main attractions: eg, Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace, Calton Hill, Arthur’s Seat, The National Gallery, Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens, The Scottish Parliament…. It is also within walking distance of the ‘Shore’ area of Edinburgh – once a bustling port, now a fashionable waterside location with recommended restaurants, wonderful wine bars and cafes, and where The Royal Yacht Britannia is berthed. Pilrig House also has a disinguished history (please see our website) and a literary connection with Robert Louis Stevenson - one of Scotland's most acclaimed authors. RLS's family owned and lived in the house, and he often visited his relatives here, and played in the gardens as a child. He refers to Pilrig House in many of his books and novels, eg Kidnapped and Catriona. We own 3 beautiful apartments in Pilrig House (the others - The Garden Apartment sleeps 3 max. and the Balfour Apartment sleeps 5 max.) - all of which are all 4-star graded, and offer guests tranquillity, away from traffic noise, during their stay in Edinburgh. Park Apartment (Sleeps 4 max.) - is extremely comfortable and has a beautiful mix of antique and modern furnishings, comprising: a spacious living-room with oak flooring, real flame-effect fire, designated dining area and recessed window seat with delightful views of the park; two bedrooms – one single, one double, both with park views and fully carpeted and equipped with hairdryers, alarm clock, adjustable heaters; a fully-equipped kitchen with all the utensils you will require; and, a luxurious, fully tiled bathroom with modern fittings, shower over the bath/shower-screen, heated towel rail and shaver point. Almost without exception, we are told by well-travelled guests that Pilrig House has been the perfect place to stay in Edinburgh! Guests in the Park Apartment have exclusive use of the house’s sweeping Palladian staircase entrance, at the top of which are double oak doors and a small seating area – a wonderful south-facing suntrap overlooking the whole park - perfect for sipping a glass of wine and watching the world drift by – especially after busy days’ sightseeing! And, even if raining, you can dine inside with the doors open and absorb the atmosphere outside! Whilst Garden and Balfour Apartment guests can also enjoy garden and park views from the main rooms, and relaxing in the private gardens, which include a lovely Regency garden offering secluded seating areas and which is teeming with wildlife – birds, squirrels, and, where the resident fox sometimes makes an appearance. Rare for Edinburgh - guests also have a (free) allocated parking space in a private car park to the rear of the house.     Private Car Park We offer: an up-to-date tourist information leaflet file, a full Welcome Pack, Eating/Restaurant File, Edinburgh Tour Company file, Bookcase full of books, children's books, Edinburgh guidebooks, street maps, board games and a variety of CDs, DVDs and Videos. We also provide umbrellas, hairdryers, fold-down seats for sitting outside, scented tissues, alarm clock, US adapter plug. On arrival, we also offer: luxury Scottish toiletries, fresh flowers, fruit bowl and chocolates, as well as mineral water, milk, coffee, tea, shortbread, biscuits, and real coffee for the coffee-maker. Membership of the Scottish Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh - guests are given a private membership card, enabling 4 adults to visit their private premises and dine, sip the best single-casked, single malt whisky in the world, in the private premises in 'The Vaults' in Leith - an old bond building, or in the Georgian splendour ot the central New Town premises. Both have lovely dining facilities. On booking either of our Edinburgh properties, guests will also be given our membership number in advance of their stay - enabling them to go on to the Scottish Malt Whisky Society website and pre-book, online, tickets for any private tastings or events that may be on during their stay at Pilrig House.     Pilrig House is within a 15-20-minute stroll (or 5 minutes by bus) of the Edinburgh's city centre (and to the fashionable 'Shore' area in the port of Leith), and all the main tourist attractions, eg The Botanical Gardens, The Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill, Holyrood Palace, Holyrood Park, The Royal Mile, The Scottish Parliament, Greyfriars Bobby's Churchyard, The National Gallery, The Portrait Gallery, The Scottish Museum, The Museum of Childhood... there are too many to mention!! Or, if genealogy is of interest., Pilrig House is only a 15-minute walk from Registry House, at the east end of Princes Street - should you be researching your family name or tree. The apartments are also close to the Water of Leith walkways - a series of walks via the river to all parts of Edinburgh, eg to the village of Stockbridge, The Gallery of Modern Art and The Dean Gallery, Dean Village ). We are also an hour by train from Glasgow, Stirling, the Scottish Borders... and, an hour by car to the wonderful East Lothian countryside, beaches, villages and golf-courses, eg North Berwick, Gullane, Muirfield. Edinburgh as a wonderful place to be based, as, there are wonderful, resaonably priced half-day, one-day and two-day tours from Edinburgh to places such as Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Glen Coe, The Isle of Skye, Inverness, Stirling, Rossyln Chapel, Hopetoun House... On booking, we provide guests with details of all the principal tour comapnies.
